Felt decent today, my body definitely took a beating but I’m still pumped to be under the bar again. I’ll get it back quick. if anything it’s motivating to me, I didn’t realize how strong I got (I mean that relatively) from where I am right now I got pretty damn strong, looking forward to getting there again.
I hit the gym twice this week, I’ll up it to three times next week. I’m still coming up with the program, right now I’m just doing a simple 3 X 5 of squats every visit and switching press and bench, then a little cardio to get my lungs working again.
3 X 5 @ 165 lbs
3 X 5 @ 115 lbs
3 X 5 @ 185 lbs
3 X 5 @ 165 lbs
1000 Meter Row – somewhere around 3:50 seconds
Nothing world beating, I’ll just creep the weight back up, I’m sure I didn’t lose all my muscle and it’s more a need for getting under the bar and feeling the weight. It is a little depressing to be knocking on the door of a 405 lb back squat two months ago and now doing a 3 X 5 of 185 lbs and not being able to walk for two days, but it’s also awesome to be back in the gym and not choking from asthma. I only hit the inhaler once today so my lungs are recovering.
So the bacterial pneumonia is cleared, but I am wheezing and now suffering asthma attacks from almost no exertion. It’s rough just playing with my daughter can leave me coughing and unable to breathe until I take a couple hits of the inhaler. I explained my symptoms to the doctor and he said that isn’t a “coughing fit” it’s an asthma attack.
I’m on prednisone, advair, and using a rescue inhaler, my lungs are not good. Body weight is down to 187 from a high of 226. I haven’t taken a full breathe in nearly 6 weeks, I feel like I constantly need air and all the coughing exhausts me. When he explained prednisone was a steroid I asked if I lift will it build muscle (may as get the benefit if I have to take it right?) but no such luck, in fact it will make me fat, weak, and limp…
I would be upset but really I just want to get healthy and get back to it, I’ll be starting from a much weaker point but with eating proper I should move up quick. In the grand scheme of things I’m still lucky, I have a great family, a job, and as of now there is nothing life threatening so I’m feeling positive.
The doctor said I probably won’t have asthma for life but it’s possible, as long as I can train I can live with it. They are testing me for cystic fibrosis too which is a little scary since the life expectancy of someone with CF is 37 years and I’m 35, but I don’t think I have that, I have some symptoms but I think they would’ve found this much earlier.
On the bright side I picked up the fiddle again since I can’t work out and I’ve been getting pretty damn good again.
Well I’ve been laid up a full week with a pneumonia, I’ve never been close to death before but I imagine I was pretty damn close. I went four days untreated with pretty much a continuous 104+ temp. I finally went to the doc and got the x-rays done and got on meds and I’m feeling a ton better, but down nearly 17 pounds in six days.
No training for six weeks while my lungs heal, normally I would be really bummed, but as an ex-smoker you’re always paranoid it’s the Big C anytime you have respiratory issues, plus I ride motorcycles and one of my co-workers had a bad motorcycle accident during this same time, so it puts things in perspective.
As soon as I’m healed and can pass a physical I’m doing the following:
1. Taking out a much better life insurance policy than the one I have now
2. Starting my training probably from near zero, I couldn’t lift a 20 lb dumbbell right now.
My 1200 total by years end will not happen in 2012 but I’m shooting for summer 2013.
5 @ 215 lbs
5 @ 250 lbs
5+ @ 285 lbs – a comfortable 7 reps
RDL – 5 X 10 @ 165 lbs
10 @ 45 lbs
10 @ 135 lbs
5 @ 155 lbs
2 @ 165 lbs
5 @ 170 lbs
5 @ 195 lbs
5+ @ 220 lbs – 8 reps with no spotter and after squats
BBB Press 5 X 10 @ 100 lbs
Back at it today after my deload week, I really did nothing for deload I was in training and I was definitely feeling it today, but I got through it. I’m going to try and cram cycle 7 into 2 weeks instead of 3 week, hence why I did squats and bench today. I’ll need a week off starting the 13th and I want to get through cycle 7 before I take another week off. After that I should be good to go, aside form a Bachelor Party in September which will set me back a month probably I should be able to go right into the holidays with no interruptions to training.
Today was a good lifting day, I didn’t think it would be but I’m happy with 350 3 times, a month ago I barely got 340 up once and I was going backwards. Ditching BBB on DL and squats is definitely working out, I felt like I could go considerably higher too. After my squat work sets and then BBB I was sore for a week and not recovered by the time DL day came around.
Pendlay Rows I just threw in there, I really get nothing from them to be honest and will probably just stick with GHR’s and ab work on DL day.
